Do you know that you actually can use free Wi-Fi internet around the campus throw HINES access system? More than than since 2010 Hokkaido University participates in eduroam® programm that allows you to use the same login in the many universityes in Japan and worldwide wice versa if you already have eduroam account you can use Hokkaido University wireless network as soon as you get within the range without any aditional registration.

*In order to use eduroam® system outside of the Hokkaido University you will need to add @hokudai.ac.jp after your login. (i.e. s00000000o@hokudai.ac.jp)

How can I get the HINES\Eduroam® ID and Password?
Due to the security reasons you can’t use the internet access of HU without proper authorization. In order to obtain login\password for HINES\eduroam® access system.

    http://www.huisa.net/newforums/showt...nternet-access
    Thanks lennikov

Today I took time to visit Information Initiative Center to get my eduroam account.
it was really dead simple. here is little guide:

    1.1 procedure to get

    • go to information initiative center
    • get into 103
    • login to a computer with userID and temp password
      • userID: s<STUDENTID>h
      • password: d
    • you will see Internet explorer asking you to reset your temporary password(there is option to read it in English)
    • type your old(d) and new password twice
    • that's it, now you have eduroam account to connect to Internet which ever university you go in the world *WOW*(ofcourse only if that university has eduroam)
    • dead simple right?

    1.2 using eduroam with linux

    1.2.1 GUI

just look for eduroam wifi and try to connect a dialog box comes:
    • security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
    • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • CA certificate: (its optional, you choose your certificate or leave it blank)
    • PEAP version: Automatic
    • Inner Authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • username: s<STUDENTID>h@hokudai.ac.jp
    • password: <your password>
    then CONNECT

    1.2.2 Command line

    • will be updated

    1.3 using eduroam with windows

    HINES at soen international house

Bumping this thread to ask if anyone currently or just finished living at Soen International Residence has successfully connected to HINES from there.

I heard from friends living there more than a year ago that they were able to use HINES from the family apartments so they didn't have to contract with NTT. But I tried taking my laptop over there (I will be living there from April) and testing, and HINES did not show up. Although, I don't have Eduroam registration yet so maybe it will work with that. I wonder if the area of the wireless signal has changed since my friends were living there.

Anyone? If any Soen people can tell me I'd be really grateful. Thanks

Update to say that I got an ID and access to all the HINES wireless networks (eduroam, elms-g/x, HINES-WLAN etc) when on campus, but none of them show up at Soen. Or at least, not at building 2 where I tested it. Oh well Was worth a try.

If anybody experienced success though, please let me know...

Well Soen is not covered unfortinately in the single dorm you can have wired internet connection. But for couple dorm you need to do separate ISP contract.

Well yes, I gave up on the possibility and signed up for a hikari contract. But like I said it is a fact that my friends were using HINES for a whole year without problems in the family apartments. I guess it depends on the strength of the signal and how close to the wifi hotspot your room is located... some people might still be lucky.
